THRILLS OF DIGGING

GIRL ARCHAEOLOGIST Britain’s youngest woman archaeologist v Miss Rosalind Winbolt, tho daughter of Mr S. E. 'Winbolt, who has added considerably to tho knowledge of Roman histoi'y. particularly by excavations at Pnlhorough, which revealed new light on the direction of tho ancient Slano street. “Gids looking for thrills might do worse than try a little digging,” said Miss Winbolt. “ There is no thrill quite like finding thoso ancient relics in the soil. All sorts of people gather round and watch. Small boys and old men wait patiently for hours in the hope that something will come to light, and very often they are rewarded. There is usually a cry excitement and handclapping when an ancient coin, a portion of a Roman villa, a millstone, or any other of the countless relics of pre-Chris-tian days are found.” Mr Winbolt, who was a master of Christ’s Hospital, is very proud of his daughter. In 1923 ho and his daughter got their biggest thrills when they dug out a Roman station at Alfoldcan, in Mid-Sussex. The next year they dug out a British and Roman villa silo in East Clilf, Folkestone, where tho yield to the two archaeologists was hidden treasure.
