LAW STUDENTS’ DEBATING SOCIETY

A debate was held by the Raw Students’ Debating Society in the lecture room, Supreme Court Buildings, on Monday last, when some twenty members attended. Mr Edmund J. Smith, LL.B., acted as judge for the evening, and the motion was— 4 * That the legislative interference by the Government in private contracts is a violation of fundamental legal rights.” The affirmative was led by Mr Race, who dealt with the harmful effects of this legislation on the legal system and the economic life of the country. Ho was supported bv Mr Beatson. Mr Cruickshank led for the negative, dealing with the same topics as the loader of the affirmative. He was supported by Mr Joel. All the members joined in the discussion that followed, the opinions of the meeting being divided, but inclined to support the negative. A notable feature was the fine standard of speaking attained by first-year students. After the leaders had summed up in reply Mr Smith addressed the meeting and gave speakers much valuable and constructive advice. He complimented the society on the improved technique in debate, and especially congratulated the now members. He placed the following speakersMr W. A. Race 1, Mr M. Joel and Mr J. C, Mowat (equal) 2, Mr J. H. Kemnitz 4. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Smith by the meeting for his continued practical interest in the society and for the helpful suggestions he had made.
