Pioneer Lodge, No. I.—A large attendance of members and visitors assembled at last meeting, Bro. J. Pryde, N.G., occupying the chair. Officers and members of Unity Lodge attended officially and were accorded a hearty welcome. T-e Social Committee reported having made arrangements for a dance to be held on May 11. The report was adopted by the lodge, and members expressed appreciation of the eirorts or the committee in making suitable arrangements. It being the opening night of the Indoor Bowling Association s tournament, the N.G. adjourned the meeting, and invited the D.D.G.M. to take charge. D.p.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, in declaring the tournament open, welcomed the players and appealed for their support mnd interest throughout the season. For the purposes of the tournament and to suit the f convenience of lodges, it is arranged that the home lodge shall provide two teams to plav two teams from different lodges respectively. Pioneer No. 1 team succeeded in defeating Unity by a fair margin, and Leith team emerged the winners in its game with Pioneeer No. 2. Bros. J. Duncan and J. Skinner were the respective skips for Pioneer teams, and Bros. C. A. Bolton and R. S. •K'ivVham skips for Unity and Leith. The following visitors responded:— D. Bro. Beveridge, N.G. Bro. E. Beecker (Leith), N.G. Bro. A. Berrett (Unity), P.G. Bro. G. Smart (Lin-
de Leith Lodge, No. 4.-N.G Bro E. Beecher presided over a good attendance of members. An appeal for assistance from a brother in distress was liberally responded to. P-G.M. Bro. D. M. Miller and P.D.D.G.M. Bro. H. H. Johnson were elected to represent the lodge on the U.F.S. Dispensary. It being th© opening night of the season for the card tournament, which is controlled by District Lodge, the competing teams from Linden and St. Hilda Lodges were in attendance. The N.G., in extending a welcome to the visitors, pointed out the value of these competitions in bringing the members together, which tended to foster the spirit of fraternity. After a very enjoyable game, which lasted over an hour, Linden Lodge was declared the winner of the first round. In view of the forthcoming indoor bowling tournament, Bro. Kirkham was appointed captain for the Leith team. Responses by visitors:—P.G. A. W. M‘Donald (Linden), V. J. M'lntyre (Unity), P.G. Bro. C. Beeby (Maori Hill), N.G. Bro. LawLinden Lodge, No. 19.—A good attendance of members and _ visitors greeted the N.G. (Bro. J. Dalziel), who occupied the chair. An appeal from a brother in distress was responded to by a substantia] donation. One member was admitted by transfer, and three propositions for membership were received. In view of the forthcoming initiatory competitions it was unanimously decided to enter the Linden Lodge team, also to endorse the action of the committee in appointing P.D.D.G.M. Bro. Glover as p’G.’s Bros. F. W. Joseph and G. [Baker were re-elected as delegates to the U.F.S.D. Members were urged to be present at the next meeting on May 4 when Bro, W, Crook© would b© in charge conducting a meeting of instruction, which would be-most beneficial to young officers. The following visitors responded:—D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, N.G. Bro. L. Beecher (Leith), P.G. Bro. E. H. Robinson (Ui'irv/. Maori Hill Lodge, No. 86.—A large attendance of members and visitors greeted N.G. Bro. J. Middleton at the last meeting. Correspondence from the Grand Lodge intimated a substantial increase in membership, also the successful opening of various new lodges. A substantial donation was granted to an appeal from a brother in distress. The N.G. called a recess to enable the syllabus item to be carried out, P.G. Bro. Joseph having consented to entertain. The subject chosen by Bro. Joseph was a description of a holiday m Stewart Island, and as he is a very -ardent student of Nature he was listened to with wrapt attention. He described the many beauty spots of the island, and referred in glowing terms to the magnificent walks in bush and glen which awaited the traveller. _ A very interesting discourse on native birds which abound in those parts concluded an instructive address. The N.G. conveyed the thanks of the members to Bro. Joseph for his very fine address, and made suitable reference to the fraternal spirit which had actuated Bro. Joseph in acceding to their request for a syllabus item. On resuming business arrangements were made to select a team of four members to engage in a debate with Leith Lodge. The following visitors responded to a vote or thanks; —D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, N.G. Bro. E. Beecher (Leith), P.G. Bro. E. H. Robinson (Unity). St. Hilda Lodge, No. 87.—N.G. Bro. A. Lawson presided over a fair attendance of members and visitors at the last meeting. Correspondence was received from the district secretary inviting members to attend the next meeting. P.G. Bro. Sligo was appointed as delegate to the U.r.b.D.A. recess was called and the members participated in a friendly game of indoor bowls, this pastime being very popular among the brethren. On the lodge resuming the N.G. took the opportunity of extending a welcome to P.G. Bro. W. Rutherford, an old and respected member of St. Hilda Lodge. In reminiscent vein Bro. Rutherford , recounted some early history of the lodge, and said he regretted that he could not take such an active part as formerly. The visitors’ vote was responded to by P.G. Bro. E. Wise (Maori Hill) and P.G. Bro. D. Harborne (Linden).
Highgate Juvenile Lodge, No. 5.—A very interesting meeting took place at the lodge room,' when the bail-yearly installation ol officers was held. It was noted with pleasure that a large number of prominent Oddfelllows were present, indicating a revival of interest in matters pertaining to juvenille Oddfellowship. President J. M'Cleery, of Kensington Juveniles, accompanied by a large number of officers and members, •attended officially, and were accorded a hearty welcome. Business, in which sick claims were attended to and correspondence dealt with, the lodge adjourned to admit of the installation of officers being proceeded with. The following district officers were admitted: —P.D.D.G.M Bro. 11. S. Kirkham (installing master), P.G. Bro. F. U. Joseph (D.D.G. War.), P.D.M. Bro. G. Baker (D.D.G. Chap.), P.G. Bro. E. Sudden (D.D.G. Sec.), P.D.M. Bro. H. G. Carson (D.D.G. Treas.), N.G. Bro. Berett (D.D.I. Guard), D.D.G.M., Bro. A. C, Beveridge (D.D.G. Mar). The ceremony was carried out in a very dignified and pleasing manner, the members being impressed with the solemnity of the occasion. After returnjng thanks to the installing officers, President Bro. M. K. Glover invited the company to adjourn to the supper room. In a few well-chosen remarks the president expressed his appreciation of the confidence placed in him by bis re-election to the office. He exhorted the boys to be diligent in their efforts to promote the welfare of their lodge and pointed out that it was only by loyal co-operation they would achieve the best results. P.G. Bro. I l ’. W. Joseph, a respected veteran of the order, tendered some good advice
and congratulated the lodge on its choice of adult officers, remarking that if the members followed tho example of those in charge they could bo assured of every’ success. _ A special vote of thanks and appreciation was accorded to Secretary’ Bro. B. B. Hendry’. The visitors’ vote was responded to by Pastpresident Bro. E. Sudden (Kensington Juvenile), and V.G. Bro. W. Merry.
