AL CAPONE'S BOOTLEG PLANT SEIZED BY PROHIBITION AGENTS 3Pr«« Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YOKE, April 30. The Chicago correspondent of the New York ‘ Times ’ states that A 1 Capone’s 250,000c10l distillery, which is equipped with trapdoors, blind entrances, and a sumptuously-furnished look-out room, was seized by the Prohibition authorities to-day, who declare that it is the largest illicit plant that has been seized in the United States since Prohibition was brought into force. The agents, who were unable to obtain entrance to the place, called a .wrecking crew, who cut a hole through a wall with pickaxes, and found the plant in full operation, although only one man, a fireman, was arrested, the Others escaping. The equipment included two 5,000 gal stills, three 5,000 gal fpnlo. full of alcohol, and other extenpivo machinery. The Prohibition authorities state; J* Only one bootlegger in the world Could finance and operate such a distillery, and that is A 1 Capone.” The plant occupied three buildings, one serving as a power house, while the second contained the vats and the third 1 the stills. Naphtha was mixed with the exhaust' fumes to neutralise the suspicious alcoholic odour before it reached outside. It is estimated that the profits of the plant were 10,000dol a day. It had been operating for a year.
