SWIMMING SPORTS

TECHNICAL COLLEGE’S FIRST EFFORT THE BOYS’ SUCCESSFUL MEETING Falling in line with other schools and colleges by fostering swimming among the scholars, the King Edward Technical College Held its first swimming sports meeting at the Municipal Baths to-day. Nearly 100 boys took part in the programme of events, and this, the forerunner of the proposed annual sports meeting, proved successful iu no small measure. All races were keen, for each was more or less an interform competition, the boys taking part being chosen representatives of their classes. The standard was fairly impressive for the first attempt, and it will doubtless improve as the sports become properly established. The preliminaries of some of the racing were decided prior to the actual sports meeting, and since in the majority of cases the same lads competed the officials showed thoughtfulness in allowing time for a “ breather ” between a number of the events. Tbo boys have set a standard which the girls, whose meeting will be held early next term, may find it hard to surpass; but it will be interesting to find what will become of the suggestion that a combined girls’ and boys’ sports should be held in future years in place of the individual competitions.
