THE CASE AGAINST BARNSLEY 1 “ PEACEFUL SOLICITATIONS" DEFENCE [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 29. The police allegation made during the hearing of two charges of inciting to lawlessness against Herbert Edwin Barnsley before the magistrate this morning was that he made a suggestion to a meeting of unemployed that they should take part in a hunger strike march on Mr Forbes’s home at Cheviot. Giving evidence, Barnsley said it was impossible to walk the water to Parliament, and therefore it was desired to see Dir Forbes at his home. It was suggested that women join in the march and be billeted on arrival at Cheviot. They would make “ peaceful solicitations ” for foodstuffs. Witness denied being a member of the Communist Party, but said he was organising secretary of the Labour Defence League. .Single men, ho said, should march to Mr Forbes’s house at Cheviot and there make peaceful solicitation. Witness admitted having said that similar marches should be made to tho homes of other Cabinet Ministers. The Sub-inspector: What would happen if someone met you at the gate and said: “ You can’t come in here ”? Witness: We would return to the city. Other witnesses gave evidence supporting Barnsley’s statements. Barnsley asked for a remand until next week, whereupon the Magistrate said the remand would have to be in custody. “ You can be remanded for a day and bail allowed,” said the Magistrate, “ but not over Sunday. I am not going to take any risks.” Barnsley was remanded until tomorrow. FURTHER REMAND. April 30. Herbert Edwin Barnsley, the unemployed leader, appeared on remand on two charges of inciting to lawlessness. He stated that he was unable to secure his two further witnesses for the defence at present, and was again remanded till Tuesday.
