CROQUET

It is intended to devote some space in each Saturday’s issue to items of interest to croquet players. The secretaries of the various clubs are asked to send in notes to “ Diana " not later than Wednesday in each week. Correspondence is invited and inquiries as to fine points of the game or othey matters connected with croquet will be answered as far as possible. Junior Shield. A pleasant function was held in the Gardens Kiosk on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs Briggs, president of the 0.G.A., presented the junior shield to the Leith 11. team and congratulated it on its success. Mrs Simpson (captain), who received the shield on behalf of the team, was presented with a beautiful bouquet by her fellow club members. Mrs Forrester and Mrs Walker contributed musical items, and a happy afternoon was concluded with three hearty cheers for the winning team. Montecillo Club. This club held a gala day on Saturday to mark the closing, and, although the weather could have been better, all present spent a very enjoyable time. Competitions were played, the winners being Mrs M‘Donald (Tainui), Miss Sparrow (St. Clair), Mrs White (St. Clair), Mrs Haig , (Montecillo), Mr M'Neil and Mr H. S. Reid (Montecillo). Afternoon tea concluded a pleasant afternoon’s outing. On Thursday evening a bridge drive was held in the pavilion to augment the club’s funds. These drives will he continued through the winter months. The prize tor the highest score in bridge went to Mrs H. S. Reid and that for 500 to Mr J. Irvine. Opoho Club. The Opoho lawns were closed on Saturday for the season, and the work of top-dressing and laying down the new lawns will be proceeded with at once. In spite of a cold afternoon, many visitors were present, and competitions of all kinds were played on the lawns. Afternoon tea, served in the Gardens Kiosk, was a pleasant interlude. The trophies won during the season were presented by the president (Mrs Hcndra), also prizes for the various competitions. Logan Park Club. A very delightful little function was held on the Logan Park lawns during tho week, when the committee entertained their captain, Mrs Cornish, who has worked so hard for the club during tho entire season. A dainty afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, after which tho president (Mrs C. Stanley Smith), in a few happilychosen words, conveyed the good wishes of the club members to Mrs Cornish, and presented her with a bouquet of everlasting flowers. Punga Club. The Punga Club was fortunate in having a beautiful day on Thursday for an all-day function on tho lawns. Club members were the guests of the president (Mrs N. Beaumont) and tho committee at a delightful luncheon, served in the pavilion, where tho tables were artistically decorated by Mrs Benzoni with chrysanthemums and autumn berries. During the morning progressive croquet and a series of competitions were played, the winners being Mesdames Gascoigne, APDonald, Lambeth, Moodie, Pearce, Misses Tayler and Millar. Mrs Briggs (president of the Croquet Association) was present in the afternoon, and presented the senior .shield to the club’s team, which proved the winners for the second time. Mrs IS'. Beaumont presented the trophies won during the season, and a very enjoyable day was concluded by the serving of tea in tho pavilion. St. Clair Club. This club closed its lawns this afternoon, this being the last of a series of functions held during the week. The trophies were presented by the president (Mrs A. S. Dalgliesh). This club has a big proposition before it, in having to decide whether it will move to a very fine site offered on tho sand hills, where four to sis full-sized lawns can bo obtained, or remain in tho present position, where any further development seems impossible. Tho present lawns arc the property of the dub, together with a very cosy pavilion, and represent tho result of many years’ work. On the other hand, if the club wishes to retain its place as ono of tbo premier clubs of Dunedin, it must realise that only full-sized lawns will offer members the practice necessary to make first-class players. Balclutha Club. The club held its closing function on Saturday afternoon, when, on account of stormy weather, it was held at the residence of the president, Mrs G. Reed. An enjoyable time was spent with competitions and afternoon tea, and tho club trophies were presented to the winners of matches as follows: — Championship: Mrs R. Lattimer; run-ner-up, Miss M.
