SHAH'S WAY WITH ROADS

Persia will soon open its doors to American automobile and tyfe manufacturers after having restricted imports for a long time (says the San Francisco ‘ Chronicle ’). Automobile dealers have been idle for months owing to the restrictions placed upon them by the Foreign Trade Control Depart, ment of the Persian Government, which insists that in order to import goods it must be shown that goods to an equal value have already been exported by the same firm. Modern factories are being estab. lished in every province of the country, and owing to the lack of proper railroad facilities new roads are constantly being opened to motor traffic. The Shah of Persia has developed fast road making into a fine art. He simply informs his Minister for Roads of his intention to visit some distant part of his country leading to which there is still only a cart track. The nest day an army of workmen is drafted to that particular track, and by the time the Shah is ready to start his journey there is a road fit for automobiles to travel on. The need for heavy trucks is now. becoming great, and the control department has been obliged to offer facilities to the importers of the heaviest types. At present European trucks are in the majority of those being imported, as they are especially fitted for the primitive and hastily constructed roads there.
