SECONDARY GIRLS' SWIMMING

TECHNICAL ESTABLISHES RELAY RECORD ARCHERFIF.LD WINS LIFE SAVING The Municipal Baths was packed by cheering schoolgirls yesterday afternoon when the annual girls’ secondary schools swimming and lilesaving contests were decided, Technical College retaining possession of the swimming shield by winning the four-a-sidc relay championship (.133 l-3yds) after a fine display in the record time of Imiu 30 2-ssec, which was 2 l-osec faster than llm existing record, put up by the Technical team last year. Otago Girls’ High School filled second place, and Columba College third. The life-saving contest provided an unusually close Archerfield College winning the shield with 73) points, Otago Girls’ High School being runners-up with 71£ points, St. Dominic’s College being third with 70-J, Columba College fourth with 70, and St. Hilda’s College fifth with OS. THE RELAY. The respective teams comprised several of Otago’s best junior girls’ swimmers, and over the first lap Miss Nowall established a lead of a couple of yards lor St. Dominic’s over Miss Gillies, swimming for Technical, with Girls’ High School in third place. Miss Olds quickly reduced the gap, however, and at the cud of two laps Technical led by 3yds from Girls’ High School, St. Dominic's having dropped back. Miss Cochrane held tho advantage over the third lap, and. swimming a fast lap. Miss llix gave Technical victory from Girls' High School with syds to spare, Columba College being third, 12yds back. The time was Imin 30 3-ssec. The result was Technical College (Misses A. Gillies, N. Olds, Z. Cochrane, and G. Ilix) 1 Otago Girls’ High School (Misses O. Ferguson, W. Clarke, A. LIFE-SAVING COMPETITION. The life-saving competition comprised waterwork and land drill, the latter being decided on Monday afternoon. In the waterwork tie first, third, and fourth methods of rescue had to be performed, and the competitors also had to dive from tho surface of the water for an object. Points were allowed for time, and also twelve points for methods. The exhibitions generally were of a high standard, . .cl Archerfield’s win was due to its superiority in the land drill the Girls’ High School holding a slight, lead in the waterwork, in which the towing by members of this team was particularly good. At the conclusion of the events the shields were presented by Mr H. H, Henderson (president of the Otago Hoad Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society), who congratulated Technical College on winning the swimming relay. and referred to tho life saving event, in which the work had been very good indeed. Tho peeformances reflected great credit on the sports mistresses, who had gone to a lot of trouble to prepare tho teams, and who were deserving of congratulations for the work they had put in. The object of the competition primarily was to encourage the schools to put forward pupils for tho various life saving awards, and it was hoped as many as possible would present themselves for examination. Cheers were given for tho winning teams.

Messrs P. A. Mathieson and H. H. Henderson acted as judges and timekeepers for the contests.
