HOW MUCH VEGETABLE SEED YOU NEED
When making out the vegetable seed order at this time of year, it is often puzzling to know how much seed will be sufficient. By roughly measuring up the ground to determine the number of rows of each sort needed, and using the* following table, the right amount of seed to order is easily found.
Broad Beans.—One pint of seed will sow a row about 50ft long. Leave 30in between each row.
Dwarf Beans.—One pint of seed is sufficient for sowing an 80ft row. Set each row 2ft apart. Runner Beans.—For a row 80ft long allow one pint of seed. The rows should be 3ft apart. Beetroot.—One ounce of seed will sow a drill 50ft long. The drills should be loin apart. Brassicas.—Seed of one ounce of Borecole (kale), broccoli, hrnssels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, or savoy will sow six square yards, for transplanting. Carrot.—An ounce is enough for p drill 100 ft long. Rows 12in apart. Leek.—One ounce of seed, sown under glass, will provide enough plants for a 100 ft row. Lettuce.—For a row 120 ft long, loz of seed is sufficient. Rows 15in apart. Onion.—One ounce of this seed will sow a row 100 ft in length. Rows 15in apart. Mustard and Cress.—Sown broadcast, loz of seed of either covers .about three square yards. Parsley.—One ounce is enough to sow an 80ft row. Drill 15in apart. Parsnip.—A row 150 ft long will require loz of seed. Leave 18in between each row.
Peas.—One pint is enough for a 60ft long drill. The distance between the rows varies from 3ft to sft, according to the height of the variety.
Radish.—When sown broadcast loz is sufficient for a bed of four square yards. Spinach.—Sow in drills 12in apart; loz will sow a 60ft drill. Tomato.—One ounce of seed contains about 5,000 seeds. Turnip.—An ounce of this seed sows a row 150 ft in length; 9in should be left between each drill.
