PORT CHALMERS COMMITTEE
The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Unemployment Committee was held yesterday afternoon. It was reported that Jive sections were available for vegetable growing by relief workers. The Masterton Unemployment Committee wrote advocating a State lottery for relief of unemployment. The letter was discussed, but the suggestion therein was not approved. A lottery, it was stated, would be merely tinkering with the unemployment problem, which it was the duty of the Government to handle systematically. It was reported that the registrations for this week numbered 306, of whom lifty-oight were at Sawyers Bay and Deborah Bay. The inspector said that eighty-throe relief workers were employed this week in Port Chalmers. The allocation' amounted to £99, and work was rationed. All the single men except six had two days’ work. The allocation was £7O for next week. The registrations wore increasing. In reply to an inquiry by a member figures wore quoted showing that the relief workers at Sawyers Bay were getting fully as much work as those in Port Chalmers borough.
