PUBLIC SERVICE RETIREMENTS

MANY CHIEFS CONCERNED [Per United Press Association,! WELLINGTON, March IC, Several officers who arc well known in Wellington arc retiring from tho Public Service, on superannuation at the end of tho present month. One of these is Mr P. J. Kelleher, Under-secretary of Internal Affairs, who first joined the service as a telegraph messenger in 1891. Mr Kelleher was promoted to the position of chief clerk of the Department of Internal Affairs on February 10, 1918. When the Government, in September, 1918, decided institute totalisator inspection Mr Kelleher was appointed chief inspector, in which position he did some fine work in bringing into vogue the new system. On July 25, 1928, ho succeeded Mr G. P. Newton an assistant Under-secretary of Internal Affairs.

After forty-four years’ service MiHenry Rose, deputy commissioner and secretary of the Government Life Insurance Department, lias decided to relinquish his position. He joined the service as a cadet in 1888 and steadily advanced in the department, becoming chief clerk in 1920, and accountant in 1923. Ho was promoted to the position of secretary and deputy-commis-sioner in 1926. He has seen the department grow from a - comparatively small institution to its present important position. Mr Charles Edward Nalder, regis-trar-general of lands, secretary of the Lands and Deeds Department, commissioner of stamp duties and registrar of incorporated societies, who is also retiring, joined the service in 1886. He was district land registrar for some years prior to 1918, and was stationed in Southland and later in Otago. In 1925 he was promoted to the position which ho at present holds. Mr George S. Nicoll, chief clerk of the National Provident Fund and Friendly Societies Department, is also retiring. Ho entered the public service as a cadet in the Government Insurance Department in 1893, and was transferred to the National Provident Fund Department in 1914 as chief clerk. Mr Nicoll i. also secretary of tho National Provident Fund Board.
