Delegates who have been attending the Painters’ Conference, returned to their homes by the express this morning. Mr W. E. Merritt, the leading Canterbury and New Zealand slow bowler during the last five years, will leave Christchurch to-night for England, where he is under contract to play for, the Rishton Cricket Club, in the Lancashire League. Mr Merritt hopes to arrive in time for the commencement of the English season, and it is his intention to return to the dominion in November. Mr Ernest Graham, of the Bank of New Zealand staff at Wellington, is spending his leave in here meeting with many old friends, including not a few to whom he extended counsel and help when he was in the Sydney branch. Mrs Black and her daughter Nellie (Mrs Prentice) will be returning to their home at Sydney by to-morrow’s express. Dr B. G. D. Dunne, who has been acting as locum tenens at Timaru for Dr W. R. Fea for the last twelve months, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. Dr Dunne, who was formerly, a well-known Otago Rugby representative, leaves for England next month to continue his studies. / Mr and Mrs F. W. Payne (London)'* Mr R‘. N. White (Melbourne), Mr P< A. Johnston (Auckland), Messrs W* Elliott and G. S. Young (Wellington)* Mr and Mrs S. E. Mair (Christchurch) * and Mr and Mrs A. J. Bradshaw (Invercargill) are staying at the Grand Hotel. The latest visitors to the City Hotel are Mr and Mrs G. Finlayson, Mr J* Jack (Christchurch), Mr R. W. Parsons (Timaru), Mr and Mrs A, E. and the Misses Smith (Skippers).
