TO BEFRIEND YOUNG WOMEN

THE BIG APPEAL DUNEDIN SYSTEMATICALLY CANVASSED The appeal to-day to dwellers in Dunedin by the Young Women’s Christian Association was on a scale commensurate with the worthiness of the cause. The association addresses itself to the task of helping girls at every emergency and need—one of the most 'obvious duties of Christianity. To perform that work it must have funds. To get as much money as is required, all classes must help. The teaching is quite plain. It is not a matter to be argued about. Nobody would of set purpose dodge such an obligation, and in order that nobody may forget it the Dunedin Association launched a double-headed scheme this morning. At 7.30 the collectors began in the streets. The city was divided into beats, one person in charge of two beats, that person made responsible for enlisting twelve others! By that scheme about 140 collectors were' on duty first thing to-day under the control of Mrs H. K. Wilkinson. None of them were on the street for more than two hours at a time. It was an auspicious beginning that £4O was received in donations before the collectors went out. On Friday of last week Christchurch made its appeal and banked £SOO. The Dunedin ladies hoped to equal or exceed that sum. Five well-stocked stalls were set up in Dunedin this morning at 8 o’clock.' Mrs E. E. Nicolson was in charge at the Bank of New Zealand corner, Mrs H. D. Skinner at the City Hotel corner, Mrs C. M. Begg at the Octagon ,• Mrs J. S. Ross at Knox Church, and Mrs H. M'Callum and Mrs D. Adamson at the Law Courts corner. Mrs C. M. Begg was in charge of the sales. The appeal was to continue until 8 o’clock this evening.
