RAIL OR SEA?

GOAL IMPORTATIONS HARBOUR BOARD PROPOSALS Last night’s meeting of the Harbour Board dealt with a report from a subcommittee that had waited on the Gas Committee of the City Council concerning coal importations, and suggesting that coal used by the Gas Works should be brought to Dunedin by sea-borne traffic instead of by rail. The Chairman (Mr J. Loudon) said that the committee had waited on the mayor (Mr R. S. Black) and the Gas Committee, and had urged that the coal used for the local gas works should be New Zealand coal, and that in the interests of the City Council and the community in general it should be brought to Dunedin by sea-borne traffic instead of by rail. The Gas Committee had promised to give the matter its consideration.

The report was adopted, and Mr I). F. H. Sharpe said that if the coal could bo sea-borne it would mean an expenditure of £2,500 on watersiders alone. If the council could meet the board halfway and expend the, money, it would be of advantage to all concerned. It was a practical work. Mr H. C. Campbell added that the Railway Department would still get haulage out of it at a very much better price m proportion than it was doing at present.
