NORTH-EAST HARBOUR

The monthly meeting of the Northeast Harbour Ratepayers’ Association was held on Monday, Mr A. M'Hutchou presiding. .Several applications for the hall were dealt with and approved. An application from the Boating Club for the hall on March 12 for the purpose of a function in aid of the unemployed was received. It was decided to grant the hall free of charge subject to the proceeds being haanded over to the local Relief Committee. Many appreciative remarks were passed as to the good work being done by the County Council per No. 5 scheme. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of appreciation from members and residents. The matter of drainage of {lie frontage of_ Wharfdalo was discussed. It was decided to urge the County Council to have a drain in common put in with a view to frontage drainage. The annual meeting of the society will be held on the fourth Monday in April, to be advertised later. The Local Church of England (St, Aidan’s) has had the approach improved by the addition of a flight of concrete steps. Numerous entries have been received for the local flower show, to be hold on March 5. The work of widening the Distinct road opposite the local Presbyterian Church is being carried out at present by unemployed labour. This has always been a dangerous spot both to

pedestrians and motorists, and the work when finished will be well worth the labour expended. The local unemployed are very dissatisfied as to the number of "days’ work allotted to them of late. Judging from accounts received as to the number of days allotted in other quarters, they appear ty have a just grievance, and many people are puzzled to know why any differential treatment should be shown by the Unemployment Board. The heavy rain experienced last week-end was responsible for one or two slips on the Beach road, but no appreciable damage has occurred. The work of levelling off the mud fiat is still progressing slowly. A , small batch of returned soldiers has been employed on this work during the 'week. Dr Burns (whoso death occurred recently) will be missed by many people in the district. Ho was always ready to assist any poor person who was in need of medical aid. The sympathy of the residents of the district is extended to Mrs Burns in her bereavement.
