HOSPITAL CONTROL

BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, held last night, was attended by Messrs W. E. S. Knight (chairman), G. Gal-' lawny, A. F. Qnelch, W. Morgan, J. W. Scurr, J. \V. Dove, D. M'Lennan, Dr W. Newlands, Mrs W. Ross, and Miss Runciman. APPOINTMENTS APPROVED, The Director-General of Health forwarded the Minister’s approval of the appointment of Dr A. J. Mason as resident surgical officer, and Dr F. R. Chisholm as resident medical officer. £3,227 REMITTED. The board approved of recommendations for remissions of accounts totalling £3,227 4s 7d due for maintenance in the Dunedin Hospital and other institutions of the board. APPRECIATION OF SERVICES. The resignation of Sister Mabel Valentine, as homo sister, from March 31, was accepted with regret. The Chairman said that Sister Valentine had now reached the time for her retirement on superannuation. This superannuation was made compulsory for all nurses and official staff of hospital boards in 1926, and in cases such as this it was well that such should prevail. Sister Valentine had been in the board’s service since 1904—a period of twenty-eight years—and during that time had occupied many important positions in the board's service—viz., sister in charge of various wards, Dunedin Hospital, from 1907 to 1912; matron, Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, from 1912 to 1916; tuberculosis out-patient sister from 1916 to 1920; home sister from April, 1920 ; and in each case Miss Valentine had given of her very best service. Rather than be compulsorily retired, Miss Valintine had taken the initiative herself by resigning her position, which permitted promotion of other nurses in the board’s service. Although Miss Valentino had reached the age for retirement, it was still considered she was perfectly capable for many years to carry out her duties, and it was with very great regret that her resignation was accepted, and the board wished her many years of health and happiness in her retirement. A LEGACY. Mr E, E. Nicolson, as executor, forwarded a cheque for £3OO, a legacy in the estate of the late Louise Miller. This was loft in token of the kindness shown to the testatrix and her husband. The Secretary said the money was left for research in rheumatoid arthritis. Ho had advised tho University Council of the receipt of tho money, but as yet had received no reply on the question of what was to he done. The cheque was received with thanks. DR RILEY’S RETIREMENT, Dr F. R. Riley wrote terminating his connection with tho hospital, his successor (Dr Dawson) having arrived to take up the chair of midwifery. He regretted severing the connection, and said his relations with tho Hospital Board had always been of the best. It was decided to minute a record of appreciation of Dr Riley’s services, and to appoint him honorary consulting gynaecologist. The Chairman said that Dr Riley commenced hiis duties in 1905, and had been continuously associated since that date.
