CHRISTMAS SPOILED
EIGHTY-TWO-MILE BUFFER RIDE. Desiring to visit his relatives at Car* lisle, England, at Christmas and not' having the money to pay his fare* David John Potts, a builder’s labourer* working at St. Albans, started the journey on the buffers of an express train' from London. The youth rode on the buffers as fa?, as Rugby, eighty-two miles, where the train stopped soon after midnight. Ha was chased along the platform and was eventually caught hiding under a seat in a waiting room. He was charged at Rugby with “ travelling on the railway without paying his fare and with intent to avoid payment.” “You ought to let me off for my pluck,” Potts said to the magistrates., The youth was discharged, and ha said he would walk back to St. Albans* He added: “I am not troubling my people for money to get homo now., Christmas has gone. I hope to have a' better one next year. I have had a' poor one this year.”
