UNION NOTES

A GRADE. Wiunfers of all three sets were Dixon (Wakari); Misses Garbutt, Sutherland, L. Meinung, and L. Kaye (Forbury); Miss Armit and Keay (Kaikorai); Miss Howell (Knox). Wakari, in the return match, won five sets against Forbury, and if they had won the toss might quite possibly have won two more, as Forbury won both, 9-8 sets, on the last service. The first men’s single, although not spectacular from the spectators’ point of view, was the best game of the afternoon, L. Galbraith defeating L. Hope, 9-8. It was decicedly a “ scientific Marathon,” the game lasting an hour and 17min. Well thought-out placings characterised the game, and, curiously enough, it was only in the ’ last game that the players “ hit out ” to any great extent. Miss Reid was also playing good tennis, defeating Miss Meinung, 6-4, and would be hard to defeat if she could “ stay on her game.” On the whole, the players seemed to bo all getting back into match stride again.

Kaikorai unexpectedly defeated Knox, 9-7. The latter were without the services of J. Hayward and also their fourth lady, but, nevertheless, Kaikorai did very well to secure their win. Wallace and Hill, both previously in the Knox B team, won their singles. Gourlay easily accounted for A. Hay, to the tune of 6-0, and to do so must have been playing good tennis.

Ravensbourne defeated First Church by 11 sets to 5, but the result of this match was not reported. B I. GRADE. Winners of all three sets were Misses Pickerill and O’Gorman, and Hardy and Pickerill (Ravensbourne); Misses Bewley and Mackie, and Simon (Macandrew Road); Misses B. Asher, Macdonald, and Kewish, and Sadd and Trotter (St. Leonards). B 11. GRADE. Winners of all three sets were Miss Cairns (Forbury); Robertson (Wakari); Misses C. M'Kimion and L. M'Kinnon (Kensington); Misses Whyborn, Burke, Brown, Mrs Norman, and Walmsley, Damage, Whyborn, and Martin (Kiwi); Francis and Smith (Knox). NOTES; The following are the positions of the B grade teamlp at the end of the first round:— —B I. Grade.—

The second round draw for the B gardes lias utilised every available Saturday till Easter. It would perhaps have been wiser to have left the draw until last Saturday’s games had been played, as the teams are now more easily sorted into top and bottom positions. As it is, some of the matches to be played can have no effect on the final results, and, moreover, Wakari, who would certainly prove a disturbing factor in the B 11. section .(as shown

by their defeat of Forbury), have littlo opportunity' of doing this ns the draw now stands. If any wet Saturdays are encountered, the draw will be further complicated. A revised list of ladder positions wilf be published next week,
