Forbury Park Trots

D.J.G.

Two light heat showers at Forbury Park yesterday afternoon did not spoil the pleasant climatic conditions under which the Summer Meeting was opened, and, considering there was no holiday in the city, the attendance, which included many visitors from both Canterbury 1 and Southland, was good. The track was in first-class order, and with no wind the conditions were ' ideal for fast times being recorded. ; When Regal Voyage won the Dunedin ; Cup he travelled the two miles in 4min 24sec, beating the record established last May by Neero- by three-fifths of a second. Later on in the afternoon Arethusa went 2min 44 l-ssec in a mile - and a-quarter race,, and this also estab- , lished a fresh record for the distance, the previous one being made by Mac Dillon last November. ; The racing throughout the afternoon was interesting and clean. Several wellbacked candidates failed in the earlier ; part of the programme, but this did not seriously affect the totalisator in- ’ vestments, £13,175 10s being handled as against £12,749£ on the same day last year, an increase of £426. * Too many horses had their chances spoiled at the starts for Mr Dunne to be congratulated on his work, and he made a bad mistake in letting th§ field away in the King George Handi--1 cap while one of the drivers was not in his sulky. ' The following are the results of the races decided during the latter part of the afternoon :~ ' DUNEDIN CUP HANDICAP, 400sovs; second 70, third 30. For horses that can do 4.28 or better. 2m. 1— Mr R. Wanden’s ch m REGAL VOYAGE (Happy Voyage— Logan Princess), aged, 12yds (Withers) ... 1 3—Mr J. J. Kennerley’s Warplane, 6yrs, scr (Owner) 2 2 Mr H. Warplane _ was a little slow' to get . into his stride at the start, and Arethusa led Warplane, Regal Voyage, ■ King Pointer, and Dundas Boy over the first five furlongs, the horses racing in Indian file. Entering the second lap King Pointer ran up into second place to Arethusa, and was followed by Warplane, Regal Voyage, Carmel, and Dundas Boy. King Pointer ran up on the outside of Arethusa’s wheel entering the last lap, and Warplane and Regal Voyage were just in behind them as they raced along the back. At the far turn the field bunched, and Arethusa led King Pointer into the straight, with Warplane and Regal Voyage-right on their wheels. Warplane headed Arethusa opposite the lawn stand, and when tackled over the last few strides became slightly unbalanced, and the favourite got up to beat him by a neck. Arethusa was a neck away third, with Carmel close up fourth. King Pointer and Free Advice were next. Times: 4min 24sec (track record), 4min 25 l-ssec, 4min 25 2-ssec. St. Petrox led Kyra, Great Bell, Ambition, and Lee Todd through the straight, and then the former two drew right away from Ambition, Lee Todd, and White Satin. Kyra lost a little ground _ before completing the lap by breaking, but regained her gait quickly, and there was no alteration in the leaders in the second circuit. Entering the last lap St. Petrox was three lengths clear of Kyra, wth Ambition, White Satin, and Great Bell next. Going along the back St. Petrox drew out three lengths clear from Ambition and Kyra, who were racing together. St. Petrox led Kyra into the straight, and ran home an easy winner by four lengths from Kyra, who just stayed on long enough to beat the fast-finishing Ukulele Lady by half a length. White Satin, Ambition, and Huon Voyage were next. Arctatis, who was a good favourite, broke several times during the race. MUSSELBURGH HANDICAP, 150 sovs; second 30, third 15. Aristotle got a good run on the rails racing along the back, and entering the last lap Donna Gulvallis was just in front of Aristotle, Luath, and Flying Cloud.
