IMPORTS IN BRITAIN

MORE BUTTER CONSUMED THREE YEARS' COMPARISON FALLING-OFF IN CHEESE A heavy increase in the importation of butter into Britain during December, compared with the past two years, is shown by figures supplied by the Dairy Produce Board. Importations from all sources during December of the past three years were as follow:

These figures show that the imports wore greater last month by 6,161 tons, compared with 193,0, tho increase in respect to Empire countries being 6,972 tons.. , Tho figures for cheese show a marked decrease, the imports in December totalling 12,787 tons, against 17,277 tons in 1930 and 11,215 'tons in 1929. Of these figures, 7,602 tons, 11,181 tons, and 3,466 tons respectively were from the dominion. ■ STOCKS IN LONDON. The estimate of stocks of all butter ’in London on January 1, including private and provincial stores and steamers not discharged, was 20,000 tons, against 9,700 tons at the same time in 1931, and 11,500 in 1930. Stocks . in Now Zealand, including those loaded into steamers which had not sailed on Janu,ary 1, together with New Zealand stocks afloat, totalled '29,350 tons, against 23,304 tons and 22,500 tons re-

spectively. The total cheese in sight was 41,376 tons, but this amount does not include stocks of Canadian and United States cheese, particulars of which are not available. The figures for 1931 and ?'Vj, excluding American cheese, wen 41,376 and 38,403 tons respectively.

The continued increase in the consumption of Empire-produced butter is revealed in the following table, which shows the imports of butter into Britain from all sources during 1931 and the importations in 1930 and 1929;

Importatons in 1931 were equivalent to 7,760 tons a week, as against 6,566 tons in 1930 and 6,160 tons in 1929. POSITION OF CHEESE. Cheese importations into Britain during 1931, 1930, and 1929 are shown by tho following table: —

From this table it will be seen that the decrease in the imports of New ZcaIflnd cheese has not been duplicated in the case of Canada and Australia, both of which show marked increase. In spite of this increase in other parts of the Empire, exports of Empire cheese arc lower than they have been for the past three years, t"is fall also being shared by cheese of foreign origin.
