Though it is only nine days since the last rainfall, a comparison of the rainfall during : the period December 1 to January 23, over the last six years shows this season to have been abnormally dry, only 1.19 inches being recorded compared to the next lowest reading of 2.96 inches during the December 1-January 23 period of 1930-31. • The average January ramfall is 2.35 inches, but so far this month only 0.66 inches has been noted. At Christchurch Magnetic Observatory the average DecemberJanuary rainfall is 4.91, but from December 1, 1931 until to-day only 1.19 inches have been recorded. The prospects for export of fruit from Canterbury this season do not make very cheerful readji.g. The estimated total will be somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 .cases, compared with the record total of 30,000 cases last season. Late frosts and tin hailstorm on January 1, coupled with the dry weather, have reduced the crops very considerably, particularly in Papanui and Loburn districts, where the bulk of the fruit for export is grown. To-day s strong nor’wester came as the last straw to orchadists who specialise in apple and pear production. Their crops, already considerably curtailed, suffered severely, for the strong wind stripped the ripening fruit from the branches. From Papanui orchardists it was learned that heavy toll had been taken of apples and pears. Most of the fruit now lying on the ground will be useless. One man said it was not sufficiently far advanced to ripen off. In any case it was too badly bruised to be of any value for export.
