SOCIAL EVENING

Every year the Otago and Balmacewen Clubs play a match for the Loving Cup, which, irrespective of the result of the match, , they hold year about. Associated with this happy social event, however, is a large wooden spoon, and this is invariably—and inevitably—held by the losers, whose sincere hope it is that they shall 'pass it on to the other club at the next year’s fixture. For the past year the Otago Club was the proud possessor of the wooden spoon, but on Saturday they were even more proud to deliver that trophy, with due ceremony, to Balmacewen, whom they defeated in the Loving Cup match the same afternoon. The event was celebrated by a smoke concert in the Otago Club’s pavilion on Saturday evening, when Mr P. W. Stabb (president of tho Otago Club) presided over a large attendance from both clubs. The occasion provided an opportunity for a good-natured interchange of badinage between the rival club members, and the toasts—all delivered in . a happy and appreciative vein—were liberally punctuated with a number of musical items.

Mr Stabb, proposing the toast of “The Balmacewen. Club,” referred to .'the splendid affinity that existed between the two clubs, which at one time shared the honour of being near the bottom of tho ladder. They wore now creeping up the ladder, but he believed that tho actual winning of competitions was a very minor part of bowling, the important feature of which was the general fraternising and the building up of friendships. The game that afternoon was a happy social event, to which they all looked forward with the keenest pleasure. He was glad, however, that they were going to lose that wooden spoon at last. Mr Stabb’s earnestly-expressed hope that the Balmacewen Club would hold that spoon for a long time was greeted with hearty laughter. Later in .the evening Mr Stabb handed the cup over to Mr Macdonald, who also accepted the spoon, presented with the Otago’s Club’s “love and affection.” ' Mr Macdonald replied in a characteristic bowler’s vein, reciprocating the Otago Club’s good wishes; and expressing the hope that the Balmacewen Club would have, the pleasure of returning the spoon next year. Mr T. Gillies (vice-president of.the Otago Bowling Club) proposed the toast of “ The Otago Centre,” which was replied. to by Mr A. J. Sullivan and Mr N. Morrison. The toast of “The Otago Club ” was proposed by Mr J. Nisb'et and replied to by Mr Stabb. A number of other toasts, including “The Visitors,” “The Ladies,” and “The Performers,” was also honoured. The musical programme was in the capable bands of Messrs S. Angcll, AV. E. Mills, C. E. Reid, and S. Taylor, who sang individually and as a quartet, and Messrs AVilson Brown, A. Clapp, N. Morrison, and E. G. Scott. The accompaniments were played by Mr R. D. Nimmo, and all the items were enthusiastically encored.
