BOISTEROUS SAILING DAY

RACES AT NORTH-EAST HARBOUR The North-east Harbour Boating Club held its annual ladies’ day at Macandrew Bay on Saturday afternoon. In spite of a strong southerly wind conditions were warm, and a very enjoyable day was spent by_ all who attended. The Ladies’ Committee supplied a very enjoyable afternoon tea to members of the' club and the visitors, while the arrangements for the representatives from sister 1 clubs were excellent.

During the afternoon two races were held over the club’s course, all-comers’ yachts and all-comers’ motor boats being catered for. The sailing event was postponed till late in the afternoon on account of the stormy conditions. The only starters in this race were the fourteen-footer, Agnes, and > a whaler belonging to tho Otago Division of tho R.N.V.R., and they made a fine picture as they flew down tho wind with free sheets or went to weather amid a smother of spray. Both boats sailed an excellent race, the naval boat finishing first by the extent of her time allowance. There were six starters in the motor boat event, and they made good time in spite of the tumbling sea, the first three boats finishing within a few seconds of each other. Tho commodore of the club (Mr W. H. Riddell) was in control, and he was assisted by an enthusiastic committee. The races resulted as follows (with time allowances in parentheses):— ALL-COMERS’ MOTOR BOATS. Sylvia (31min 28sec) 1 Stella (26min 58see) 2 Hermione (27m in 13sec) 3 Six starters. Tho race was won by eight seconds, with three seconds between second and third. ALL-COMERS’ YACHTS. R.N.V.R. Whaler (6min) 1 Agnes (scr) 2 Tho only starters. The whaler led throughout.
