N.Z. BOWLS TOURNEY
FIFTH AND SIX ROUNDS DF RINKS [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 18. The fifth and sixth rounds of the rinks in the New Zealand tourney were played to-day. _ In the morning games at Beckenham a good deal of interest attached to the bout between the Skoglund family and Bremner’s rink. It was an exciting game, the Stratford four winning by a point. Tonkin and Collett staged a stern battle. There were marked fluctuations of fortune in a high-scoring game, but Collett won 3 up. Bremner mastered the unfavourable conditions in the afternoon in good style, and had matters very much his own way against Tonkin. The Skoglund family were the undoing of Burgess, but it was a fine contest. Dick (Ashburton) occasioned a irpriso by beating Casef, of Thorndon. This was a- particularly fine game, with honours just slightly in favour of Dick. Dearo had little trouble with Brown, whose rink is not over strong. Rolls never gave Truman a look in, and Ferguson comfortably heat Sandston. Although the Papanui rink is a fairly strong one, it did not appear to have much chance of defeating M'Whannell. but the local men had the belter of the game and won. Ainger was seen in a favourable light against Abbott. The Caledonians were expected to carry all before them, but the Christchurch team played a sound game, to finish 4 up. Read (Anderson’s Bay) did not seem tb he able to master the conditions at St. _ Albans, and Bartlett secured his third win at the expense of the visitors. Walker scored his fifth win by accounting for Hayward, whose play lias not been up to the standard expected. Against Wyber, Walker’s team built up some fine heads, and the Auck-landers-won comfortably at the finish. Gray showed that his aspirations towards winning the classic must ‘be taken seriously, and a continuation of the form displayed by his team this morning will see them occupying a position of prominence when the final stages are reached. Wilson (Linwood) surprised by beating another triple winner in Tyrrell (Roslyn), whose chances of success are highly assessed. The Roslyn team had an easy win in thq afternoon, and Gray also had things very much his own way against Johnston, whose earlier form suggested that his rink could be exepeted to perform well. The Kelburn combination is expected to be the finalists, if not the actual winners. In tho clash between _ Sprosen and Foster the latter was prime favourite, but he was never at any stage of lie game in a winning position, Sprosen scoring by a handsome margip. Calder, who is unbeaten to date, maintained his consistency and defeated Dr Orchard after a fine contest. The Phoenix rink mastered tho heavy green in the afternoon, apd their Wanganui opponents also seemed to rise to the occasion, for a very exciting game resulted in the Phoenix team getting its sixth victqry by a point. Madsen’s rink made Foster do his best. The Caledonians will be receding from popular favour for the championship unless their displays show a marked improvement. Hutchison (Dunedin), with four wins, added another to his credit when he decisively outbowled Worsley (Hornby), tfhe Dunedin rink’s prospects in the championship look very bright. In the afternoon, however, they met their Waterloo in Martin (Sumner).
