The Commissioner .of Police (Mr W* G. Wohlmann)jiarrived in Dunedin last night after a tour of the West Coast, the goldfields district of Otago, and Southland. He returns north ou Friday. Mr F. W. Payne, who many years ago was well known as a dredging engineer in Otago, arrived in Dunedin last evenhg from Christchurch. Though his present visit is principally in the nature of a holiday, Mr Payne is still interested in dredging here, and he will probably spend some • time in Central; Otago, visiting various goldfields before * returning north. Since leaving Dun* edin shortly before the outbreak of tha I Great War, Mr Payne’s interests hav« \ been chiefly centred in the tin dredg- < ing industry in the Federated Malay States. Reference was made at last night’s meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council to the recent death of Mrs Isabella Bain, of St. Leonards. Mr J. P. Cartwright returned from Wellington by last night’s express. Mr and Mrs F. W. Payne (London),' Miss R. G. Lyon; and Mr J. T. Martin (Wellington) are staying at the Grand Hotel. The latest arrivals at the City Hotel include Messrs E. J. Guinness and R, C. Murie (Wellington), Dr J. Hight, Messrs T. H. Thomson and A. E. Flower (Christchurch), Misses A. PufEett and Schrimshaw (Temuka), Miss T. A, White (Gore), Miss A. M’Haffie, and Messrs S. S. Bridgeford and R, t Y.; Thompson (Invercargill).
