“SATURATION POINT.”

TO THB EDITOR. Sir, —Although no advocate of large families in these days, I think Mr Kite’s point is somewhat amiss, as I don’t think tho world will ever reach saturation point as far as support is concerned. We can hardly claim want of natural production when we are dumping coffee by the ton into the sea, ploughing in every third row of cotton, sending the American militia to close down oil wells in Texas, and last night I read the output of tin was to be reduced till that commodity reached a certain price, with next year a further reduction, till it has reached a still higher price. All this goes to prove the failure of capitalism (individualism), as goods are under this system destroyed to stabilise a price instead of being utilised to benefit mankind. This system wo call “sound finance ” —just as sound as when a child smashes a toy to see what makes the wheels go round, and then asks dad to mend it, as wise politicians, bankers, and business men, who have brought about the present system, ask our suffrage to continue doing the same over again. Perhaps they say; “We did not bring it about; it just growed up like Topsy.” In that case I say: “Why go back to the ‘ talking shop ’ ? It will, like Topsy, just grow up again.” We Socialists are called everything from atheists to dreamers. Well, I quote pretty good authority. ’“The land shall not be sold for ever; for the land is mine” (Leviticus xxv., 23). “ A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness; thou shalt not lack any thing in it” (Deuteronomy viii., 9). And yet, under capitalism, I am allowed nine days’ work per month for a family of five and dependent on charity for tho remainder. Had I known what a mess “ sound finance ” would make in 1931 I would hardly have fought as a single man from 1914 to 1918 for some mothers of three or to make democracy free.— I am, etc., Popoffski. December 23.
