'At an altitude of three miles a balloonist must shout in order to be heard by his companion in the same basket, hut at one mile up balloonists eight miles apart may converse in an ordinary tone of voice. During the Great War the number killed in the forces of tho British Empire was 1,089,919; Allied countries lost 2,477,683, and Germany and her associated nations suffered 3,651,690 dead—a staggering total of over seven and a quarter million lives in four years.
