BACK TO GAOL

CHASE OF OAR SNEAK [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 22. Discharged from _ prison yesterday morning after serving a sentence of three months’ imprisonment for stealing money from a motor bus, Lindsay Edist Edward Garner, a panel-beater, aged twenty-one, converted a motor car to his own use and was arrested in Customhouse Quay "after he had been chased by constables through the city streets. When he appeared before Mr T. B. M'Neil, S.M., at the Police Court this afternoon he was sent back to gaol for a further period of three months. Sub-inspector Lopdell stated that the car was taken from the city early last night, and the accused with another man and some girls took it to a party at Kaiwarra. The car was reported missing, and late at night Constable Grant saw it going up Taranaki street and followed it through to Willis street, where he saw a man and three girls get out. When he reached the car he saw the accused sitting in the driver’s seat, and also another girl. As the constable approached the accused started the car, but the constable jumped on the running board, and although Garner swerved the car from side to side in an endeavour to jerk him off he managed to stop it. The accused then jumped out of the car and ran down Ghuznee street into Sturdee street, where Constable Fletcher took up the chase and ultimately arrested him in Customhouse Quay.
