A novel idea is being tried m the Frood mine, Ontario, where some ot the underground workings are ventilated with compressed air. The air is fed into the mine from the shaft, and an evil-smelling gas, ethyl mercaptan, is to be introduced into the air as a warning of fire, should it occur. Two quart flasks of tljis compound introduced into the air will reach every part of the mine within ton minutes. Its unpleasant odour is recognised by the workers in an instant.
