£20,000 CONTRACT

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE AT MOSGIEL A contract for the building of a new Holy Cross College at Mosgiel has just been let to G. Lawrence and Sons. The plans and specifications for the work were prepared by Messrs Mandeno and Fraser, who report that the cost of tho undertaking, when the tennis courts and heating are taken into consideration, will be close on £20,000. The scheme, as prepared, provides for only part of the planned building to bo erected, and gives provision for approximately eighty students, as well as priests. Most of the accommodation is in tho form of single cubicles, and each is complete with hot-water radiator and wardrobe. Very extensive lavatory accommodation, which includes a bathroom, shower room, boot room, and lockers, is a feature of the internal appointments. The scheme also allows for the remodelling of the kitchen department, of the service quarters, extending the chapel, provision of up-to-date laundry, motor garage, etc. The central portion, which is in the meantime omitted, will provide additional accommodation for students as well as sitting rooms and bedrooms for priests, and in the front a main entrance hall, reception rooms and oratories. The three sides of this central portion with a connecting corridor at the rear, will form an airy yard surrounded by a cloister. ' Construction throughout will be very substantial, and, although showing to the outside a Georgian brick treatment, should be earthquake resisting to a considerable degree, because it embodies a very complete system of reinforced concrete, beam piers, and bends. The finish both inside and outside will be plain, but good, the Georgian treatment giving a quiet, dignity very suitable for an institution of this nature.
