SECONDARY INDUSTRIES
GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S REMARKS ENDORSED [Per United Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, December 18. Lord Bledisloe’s speech at Stratford urging tho need for caution in the building up of tho secondary industries, which was the subject of criticism by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, received the support of the North Taranaki Executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day. Air H. E. Blydo, the president, said tho protection required by the secondary industries was costing New Zealand £7,000,000 annually, a sum sufficient to provide work for all the unemployed for the whole year. That protection was a heavy burden on the primary producers, lie urged that instead of a “ buy New Zealand goods ” campaign they should encourage the buying of British goods. By doing so Now Zealand would buy manufactures which could he cheaply produced in Britain, while Britain would bo enabled to buy primary produce that was cheaply produced in tho dominion. The executive passed q. resolution endorsing tho sentiments' expressed by Lord Bledisloe, and emphasising that protection was the cause of greatly increased costs to the farmers.
