RELIEF WORK IN CITY RESERVE COMMITTEE’S PLANS The Reserves Committee of the City Council is recommending that the undermentioned works, proposed to be carried out as relief works under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 scheme, he approved:— Cutting of ditch and laying of drain pipes in the Caversham recreation reserve for the purpose of assisting to drain the subsoil in the vicinity of the kindergarten building. The laying off of an additional croquet lawn on portion of the Town Belt for the Opoho Croquet Chib, subect to the condition that the club contribute the sum of £2O to cover the cost of grass seed, fencing, draining, and supervision. Authority has been granted for the city engineer to proceed with the undermentioned works as unemployment relief measures under the provisions of the Unemployment Board’s scheme No. s: Reshaping carriage way in Uxbridge street and forming screenings footpath on south side thereof. Estimated cost to the council, £54. This work is the subject of a petition from a number of ratepayers and residents in Uxbridge street. Continuing the formation at present in progress in Baldwin street into Buchanan street so that the latter can be formed between Baldwin street and Calder avenue. Estimated cost to the council, £3O. Removing hedge, grading bank, and erecting a railing on the corner of Barr street and Elgin road. Estimated cost to the council, £6. Widening the bend in the road between the top of Russell street and Young street. Estimated cost to the council, £75. The answer is that the scheme is being worked on the same basis as in the past. In every four consecutive weeks every man is given work during three of those weeks. His stand-down week may be any one of the four weeks, but the scheme is arranged so that no man has two standdown weeks in succession.
