PROFICIENCY TEST
“DETERMINED STIFFENING UP” FIGURES TELL THE TALE |Fn Unitjd Fxsm Aesociatiok.] AUCKLAND, December 11. The statement that this year’s school proficiency examinations were more difficult than usual having been officially denied, investigations were made in a group of Auckland city and suburban schools. It found that these schools presented.67o chidren; 439.. gained proficiency and 85 competency. The percentage who gained proficiency was 65.5. Last year the same group presented 644 children, of whom 590 gained proficiency and 29 competency, the percentage gaining proficiency being 91.6. Head masters expressed the view that there had been a determined stiffening up of the examination, and complained that it had been done without due notice and had reacted most unfairly on pupils. The figures relating to a large private school are also interesting, as this school was examined last year and this year. Last' year of 69 candidates, 68 gained proficiency and one competency. This year, of 59 pupils, 47 pained proficiency and nine competency; three failed.
