THE ARCADE.

TO THM JDITOK. . Sir, —Thank goodness somebody haS called attention to the cheapness anti general suitability of the name which, so it is proposed, will be attached to the charming little street that has sprung up on the site of the old Arcade. “Broadway.” indeed! Redo, lent of taxicabs in massed formation, common advertising signs, and chewing gum! I agree with “ R.D.C. '* that “ The Avenida ” will be more ex* elusive and more appropriate. At any rate, there must be dozens of names more applicable than hackneyed Broadway-—especially in the case of a by-wav that savours of Old Spain.; The planning of this Street was an inspiration; the proposed naming of it is an abomination.' —I am, etc., Senor.' October 11. ' TO THE EDITOR.. Si r< —l am entirely in accord withi the views expressed by your correspondent “ R.D.C.’ in regard to the naming of the fine street that has resulted from the transformation of the dfan and disreputable (dinginess of the old Arcade. I think the choosing of the name “Broadway” betokens a singular lack of imagination and appreciation on the part of those popularlyreferred to as the “ City Fathers,” op whoever is we have transplanted inthe midst of ■ our city a piece of Old Spain, an! avenue of remarkable charm and ate traction, and that it should be known as “ Broadway a name redolent or the garish lights and raucous noises of a busy city (not, of course, that Dunedin is not a busy city) seems to ma to be the result of a misguided sense of values. While I do not agree with R DC.” that “Avenida” is a suitable name for the street, I think that it would bo only right, seeing that the Spanish type of architecture and la}'out has been copied, that a Spanish name should be chosen. The original Broadway, New York, is more frequently known as the Great W hue Wav,” and all X ask is that the City, Fathers take a walk to the new street, look over it only once, and then ask themselves if they could imagine it as» the “Great White Way.’ I doubt it* —I am, etc., Andalusia, December 11.
