March 5. —North-east Harbour Club races and R.N.V.R. v. Sea Scouts. Vauxhall regatta. April 2.—Oliphant Cup race and club races, Vauxhall. April 9.—Vauxhall Cup and Sell Memorial Shield races, Vauxhall. AROUND THE CLUBS. NORTH-EAST HARBOUR. The race for the Strang Cup, which was to have been sailed at Macandrew Ba.) to-morrow afternoon, has been postponed till early in the new year. Entries for the regatta are still coming in well, and good progress is being made with the preliminary arrangements. Those who have not yet entered are reminded that this year entry forms must be filled in before a boat is eligible to race in any event. Forms may bo obtained from the secretaries of the various clubs, and entries close at 8 p.m. on December 15. Owing to five entries for last Saturday’s cruising race coming in too late, these boats were not allowed to partici-

pate, while two others which came to the starting line were ruled out for the same reason. This club is enforcing the Y.R.A. rules, which state that entries shall be made as required by the Sailing Committee, Notice of intention" to enter ma. be given by telegram, despatched before noon of the day on which the entries close. Such entries by telegram, however, must be confirmed in the proper form by post. The same rules also state that, subject to the regulations of the national authority, a sailing committee may refuse any entry. A chart of the club’s course has been prepared by Frank Stunner, which will bo incorporated in the regatta programme. This should prove useful to competitors and spectators alike. A similar chart is being prepared by Captain Nicholas, and this will be displayed in the club house. , The next regatta dance will be'held in the hall, Macandrew Bay, to-morrow evening. BROAD BAY. Arrangements for the regatta at Broad 13ay are now complete. All intending competitors aro asked to outer early. Forms are obtainable from all club secretaries and Broad Bay committeemen. The committee has decided that the prize money shall be maintained at the high level of past years, and solicits the support of all owners. Broad Bay boats have been prominent in the two series <of club races held so far this season. At Broad Bay Hermoine and Marewa were first and second respectively, while at Macandrew Bay the places were reversed. In the yacht race at Broad Bay Miti won from Dawn and Dawn won from Miti at Macandrew Bay—a strange coincidence of reversals. VAUXHALL. Mr Matheson, who built Pipi, has acquired the 14-footei Mavis, and will moor her at the boat harbour in future. jProwler is in the water again after a ’’general overhaul, and is looking up to the mark. An 18-foot V-bottomed runabout, to be named Miss Lenore, is being built by Mr J. A. S. Algie, and she will bo of the most up-to-date small craft on the harbour. Power will bo derived from a 40 h.p. automobile engine and she is expected to develop a speed of about 25 ra.p.h.. An electric selfstarter and automobile controls will be fitted, and the boat will be upholstered throughout. O.Y.C. It is regretted that several entries received after the .closing date were not accepted. Boat owners are advised that entries for the season’s racing may be made on one form, and those not entered for the future races should enter now. The open-air dances hold a t the boat harbour on the sth and 9th instant were very successful. The social spirit existing in the Otago Club is very strong, and the success of the club in future is assured whjle this club spirit exists. On Wednesday next, December 16, the final dance for this year will be held at the boat harbour, at 8 o’clock. The committee is adding further novelties to the programme, with the idea of eclipsing all previous efforts. Members are urged to bring their friends; sister clubs’ representatives - will be present, and a wonderful night is promised.

Stella, Gloaming, Southern Star, and Waipori are all ready for the water and looking ready for the regattas. Thetis and Quest made the Spit their cruising destination on Sunday. JVlany others of the Otago Club’s fleet were seen at other places round the harbour. MORE SQUABBLES! Two years ago a squabble in the ranks of the .North-east Harbour Boating Club resulted in several members resigning and throwing in their lot with the Vauxhall Power Boat and Sailing Club. Since then quietness has reigned, but beneath the outward placidness feeling lias apparently smouldered and has now broken forth again. Certain members of the Macandrew Bay Regatta Committee took exception to the delegate to the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association appointed to represent it at the regatta, and voiced their objection to the parent body, as a result of which the delegate, who formerly was an officer in the''North-east Harbour Club, withdrew from the position. The tone of the letter was not in the best of taste, though it put the opinion of the malcontents admirably. They stated that they had no confidence iu the delegate appointed. Now. when a man is appointed by such a body as the association, which is composed of the ablest members of each of the affiliated clubs, should the club dig up the hatchet again'and renew hostilities? In any case, the trouble arose in the first place with the Boating Club, which is an entirely distinct body from the Regatta Committee, though the personnel is almost the same. i The Vauxhall Club has now taken umbrage at the slight cast on it through its delegate to the association and has decided to hold a series of club races on Boxing Day, when* the Macandrew Bay regatta will be held, substantial cash prizes being offered by the town club. Tin’s may ease the hearts of the Vauxhallites, but it is scarcely a sporting revenge. Surely a better way could be found. The sport is just returning to its former popularity, but this constant bickering will undoubtedly drive away a large number of would-be yachtsmen. Cannot tho clubs let bygones be bygones and start off with a clean slate? BROAD BAY REGATTA. Eleven events, exclusive of two model yacht races, are on the programme of the thirty-eighth Broad Bay annual regatta, to bo ihekl on New Year’s Day. There are three sailing events which cater for all classes 1 , while eight events for power boats are scheduled. Included in fcho latter is the outboard championship of Otago (unlimited), an all-comers’ handicap for cruisers, and a heat of the 0. C. Wakefield Cup contest foi boats of over 15 m.p.h. The prizes are on the usual lavish scale and good racing is assured. O.Y.C. RACES. Following are the starting times, witli starting numbers in parentheses, for the Otago Yacht and Motor beat Club’s launch races, to be held to-mor-row afternoon: — Motor boats, 74 m.p.h. and under.— Pacific, 3h 30miu (1); Nell, 3h S4min (2); Rover, 3h 35rain 20sec (3); Southern Star, 3h 36min (4); Jewel, 3fa 36min (5); Nomad, 3h 37mm 48sec (5). There is now little doubt that the Wellington Harbour will be the scene of tho 1032 contest for the Cornwell Cup (wrote “ Spindrift,” in the ‘ Herald ’ recently). The Wellington Provincial

Yacht and Motor Boat Association has accepted the conditions laid down by the Takapuna Boating Club in regard to the contest bei-.g held separately from the Sanders Cup contest and the matter of suitable boats, and has axed February 1 as the date of the first race. Arrangements have already been made to commence the Sanders Cup series on January 18, and there is now no fear of the junior contest being in any wav overshadowed. This appears to be the chief concern of the Takapuna Boating Club. So far challenges have been received from Otago, Wellington, and Manukau. It is expected that Tauranga, Whangarei, Hamilton, Lyttelton, Christchurch, Paremata, and Plimmerton will also forward challenges. A great effort to secure the cup will be made by Otago. The first trials will be of a'preliminary nature to eliminate crews until the three best crews are selected. When these crews are chosen they will compete until such time as the best crew is decided upon.

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM. The trans-Tasman yacht race is ta be repeated (states the ‘ Southland News’). The winner last year— ‘ though his title has been fiercely disputed—was one Tambs, a carefree Norwegian ’;o has been wandering about Polynesian waters ever since. He has challenged all and sundry, but stipulates that there shall be no engines on board his competitors’ boats. The ocean race for the Balokovic Cup will start from Auckland on Friday, January 15, at 7.30 p.tn. The course will be round the Little Barrier Island, thc'.ce round the Great Barrier Island, thence round Cuvier Island, and back to the stalling line, a distance of -163 sea miles. The race will bo confined to A . and B class yachts. Mr J. Barton, the N.E.H. Club’s new launch handicapper, is to be congratiilated on the fine job he made of his initial attempt. So accurate were his calculations that the first three boats finished within a few seconds of one another.
