FIRST CABINET MEETING
IMPORTANT POLICY OUESTIONS IN VIEW (Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, December 9. Cabinet met to-day. Several important policy questions approach finality, but, as the Postmaster-General (the Hon. A. Hamilton) does not return from the south till Friday, Cabinet has not considered the Broadcasting Board’s appointment, and the Prime Minister states that there has been no selection of the members. He was less communicative when current speculation regarding the size of Cabinet, and possible appointments were brought to his notice. Mr Forbes is not inclined to discount rumours, holding that if there are sufficient denials there can be important deductions. His comment on the suggestion that Cabinet was likely »to consider legislation providing for an extension of the Parliamentary period to four years was simply: “I never mentioned the subject in the election campaign.” “ A considerable amount of Cabinet’s time to-day was spent in dealing with purely departmental business. There were sittings in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The Prime Minister, during the absence of the Hon. Downie Stewart at Honolulu, will resume his former responsibility as Minister of Finance.
