SUMMER SHOW

KEEK COMPETITION IN HORSE SECTIONS

BIG ENTRIES IN HURDLING AND HUNTING

Particularly keen competition in most of tlio horse sections was a big feature of the second day’s offerings at the Otago Agricultural and 1 astoral Society’s annual summer show. . At Tahuna Park this morning the judging started punctually, and, the climatic conditions being more congenial than those of yesterday, there was a bigger gathering of spectators around the display ring. Some magnificent animals were seen among the Clydesdales and working draughts, while the hackney sections, which drew entrants from many parts of the South Island, droved conclusively that the art or horse breeding has not died with the development of the uses to which motor vehicles can be applied. The hackney section was very full, and the display of light horses generally was one of the best ever held at Tahnna Park. It is doubtful, indeed, if any show in tho South Island has produced a likelier collection of animals. In some of the competitive sections record entries were received, as many as twenty-nine taking part in to-day’s competition for the best hurdle jumper. The wire jumping competition drew twenty-three entries, and the leaping championship of Otago eighteen entrants. More than ever it was made apparent that the ladies, representing both the .town and country communities, are taking a Jive interest in shows of this kind. Needless to say, their patronage and assistance are very welcome, irrespective of the fact whether they are active competitors or not. The industrial exhibits and sideshows attracted a great deal of attention from the townsfolk who found their way out ;to the grounds in the afternoon, and along some of the skittle alleys and suchlike the atmosphere of a village green in fete was captured. Under the able supervision of Mr C. E. Barnes, the Banway Department has had the arrangements for transporting stock .well in hand. Another feature of the show which has many appreciative references has been the bountiful and tasty catering, organised for those who repaired to the luncheon and tea rooms under the big grandstand. The results of the judging are a« follows; — HORSES CLYDESDALES. Judge: Mr T. Logan (Ofama). The entries were also larger than usual, and Mr Aubrey must have had his work cut out to differentiate between some of the animals.
