Miss Victoria Kent, Spain's first Republican director-general of prisons, -who is an Irishwoman by birth, appeared in a moving scene recently. She was approached by three orphan girls who prayed her to release their brother, Antonio Rodriguez, who is serving a sentence in Madrid prison, in order that he might kiss his dead mother before her burial. Miss Kent was so moved by their plea that it is said she joined in their tears, and ordered the prisoner’s immediate temporary release. Rodriquez was arrested after the burning of convents.
