GORED BY BULL
FARMER SUCCUMBS AT INJURIES FAMILY’S BRAVE ATTEMPT AT RESCUE While removing a bull, a pure-bred Holstein, Irom one paddock to another on his lam on Saturday morning, Mr T. Lyon, of Greenfield, was suddenly attacked by the animal and so severely mauled that ho died in the Balclutha Hospital last evening. , What piovoked the animal to the attack is not known, and the first intimation that anything was wrong was the bellowing of the animal, which attracted the attention of Mrs Lyon, who was in the house near by, and on looking outside she saw the bull goring her husband, wlio was lying on the ground. She called to the throe children—a boy of ton and two girls of fourteen and sixteen—and rushed out to give assistance. One girl seized the animal by the horns wiile the others beat it with sticks, thus attracting its attention away from its victim, and enabling Mr Lyon to bo dragged to safety through a fence. Unfortunately the plucky rescue came too late, for extensive wounds had been inflicted, and Mr Lyon failed to rally. An inquest was held at Balclutha this morning befoie Mr W. King, J.P., sitting as coroner, and a jury of four. Sergeant Armstrong watched proceedings on behalf of the police. Evidence wts given by Joyce Lyon, a daughter of the deceased, who said that she was looking out of the window with her motlur and sister and saw the bull goring hei father, who was on tho ground. As they came 'out the hull rushed right nto them, but she hit it over tho head with the stick. She then tried to drag her father away while tho sis lei held tho hull’s head by the horns. Kicntunlly they got him away, tho bull continuing to perform in a most terrible manner. Medical evidence was given as to the extent of the deceased's injuries, and a neighbour, Wr Brackett, said that when ho rushed out ho found the bull
in the back yard creating havoc,. and they had to shoot it. The Coroner referred to the remarkably courageous action of the girls in going to the assistance of their father ns they had done, without thought of themselves, and the jury, in bringing in a verdict that deceased met bis death as the result of being injured by a bull, added a recommendation that tho girls should bo awarded the Royal Humane Society medal.
