TEACHING SERVICE
ODORS CLOSED FOR 1932 EFFECT OF EDUGATiOH ECONOMIES No probationer school teachers are to be appointed in 1932, according to advice that the Otago Education Board has received from the Director of Education (Mr T. B. Strong). The closing of the door to aspiring teachers for 1932 is part of the general economy being effected in the Education Department, the Minister (Hon, R. Masters) having taken this action under the regulations. The Otago Board usually advertises for probationers about the end of October, but this year it has not dona so. Last year sixty probationers were appointed in Otago, and nearly forty the year before. . ■ A departmental circular states that the only effect of not engaging probationers in 1932 will be that the period of training will be reduced from four years to three in 1933. If recruits are then needed _ for the teadiing profession, the period of training will be reduced either by dropping the pre-college or post-college year of probatiouary service. It is possible that the period ol training college service may be reduced from two years to one year, an arrangement which was in operation under exceptional circumstances some years ago.
