UNCLE AND NIECE
— —■ KNIGHT'S WEDDING ANOTHER ENGLISH CASE. The Church of England marriage law in -Britain resulted at Portsmouth on September 19 in a prominent churchman being married in a registry office. This was followed by the holding in St. Jude’s Church, Southsea, , afterwards of a “ special service,” with the Wedding March and marriage _ hymns. This was attended by the bride and bridegroom. . Church law does not sanction a man s marriage with the niece of his late wife, therefore Sir Harold Rufus Pink, who has thrice been Mayor of Portsmouth, was forced to go to a registry office for his wedding with Miss Blanche Marian Stares, daughter of the late Mr James Stares, of Havant, and niece of the late Lady Pink, who died about two years ago. Sir Harold is a lay canon of the Portsmouth diocese, and has been church warden at St. Jude’s for many years. The registry office ceremony was made possible by the recent alteration of the civil law Tho church service was conducted by the vicar of St. Jude’s, the Rev. C. F. Ayerst, and was choral. Tho Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth were present. Sir Harold is seventy-three years of age.
