AMERICAN BY-ELECTIONS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DEMOCRATS WIN THREE OUT OF FIVE SEATS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. WASHINGTON, November 3. The Democrats won three of five congressional elections on Tuesday, and advanced to a majority of one in the House of Representatives. The Republicans won the other two seats. The standing of the parties in the new House now is: Democrats 217, Republicans 215, and Farmer-Labour 1. There are two vacancies. The Democrats won the Republican stronghold in the East Michigan district, and attained a big lead in the gubernatorial race in New Jersey, and they are expecting victory. The elections to the House of Representatives were necessitated by vacancies caused by deaths of sitting members. An election to be held in New Jersey on December 1 'will probably add one more to the Republican total. ! NEW YORK CITY ' TAMMANY HALL CANDIDATES. NEW' YORK, November 4. In the city elections the mayoralty is not being contested, but Tammany Hall has placed its candidates in the lessor posts with record majorities, despite the city scandal investigations, etc. Tammany hailed the results as an expression of great public confidence in the office holders, but the investigations concerning the same office holders which will be continued produce more astounding allegations of graft every day.
