STRANGE MISHAP
FOUND DEAD IN MUD FLAT [I'EU UNITED I’KESa ASSOCIATION. 1 WELLINGTON, September 11. Kotnrning from gathering firewood on the reclamation area, at Thermion this afternoon, Ernest William Dockrell, a waterside worker, aged about 118, slipped and was subsequently found dead in tho mud. Dockrell and a companion wero taking a short cut homewards across the reclamation area shortly after 1 p.m. The circumstances of tho mishap have not yet been ascertained definitely, hut it is understood that Doekrell’.s companion, who had preceded him on the trip across the reclaimed land, found a, soft patch and became hogged. Dockrell managed to reach a culvert:, and it is believed that his hoots, made slippery hy walking across the mud. slid on the hard surface, throning him down. .hooking across, his companion, who was still in the mire, saw him Hat on his face and called for help. I’asM-rs-by heard the calls and came to his assistance. They dragged him out of the mud and went across to Dockrell, hut found that ho was dead. Tho cause of death is not known, and will bo decided hy tho coroner.
