PALMERSTON NOTES

There were no first grade games played in the district on Saturday, but in the junior grade the School team defeated Karitanc 6-3, and Waikouaiti defeated Palmerston 11-6.

The School team met Karitanc at Palmerston, and both teams made the game, very willing. The School backs were not given many opportunities, but when they got going they showed their superiority; the game was one of the best, junior games seen this year, and the School well earned their win. The Palmerston Juniors travelled to "Waikouaiti, and played one of the hardest games of the season. The game was a forward struggle from start to finish, and Waikouaiti were very lucky to win at all. In the opinion of one of the spectators, the Palmerston team wore far the better team, but bad a lot of bad luck.

There seems to bo a shortage of experienced referees in the district for the junior games, and it is high time that the Eastern District looked more to the interests of the junior players and saw that suitable referees are obtained for the matches. In many cases members of the homo team have had to try to find a referee on the morning of the match, and then a suitable one is not always available. An instance of this was seen in the game at Waikonaiti on Saturday; the referee ahtays gave what, no doubt to his mind, was a fair decision, but his ago prevented him from following the game and keeping it in control. The junior matches on Saturday saw the end of the junior competition. Karitano were the winners, with the School team rnnners-np.

The weather has turned very wintry again, and for the football on Saturday was very disagreeable. Since then it has been very boisterous, with occasional skiffs of rain and sleet; it Is still blowing very bard, and shows i‘m signs of abating.—Own eorrespondenl.
