THE D.J.C. SPRING MEETING

At a special mooting of the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club, bold yesterday afternoon, it was decided to apply to the president, of the Racing Conference for permission to race on Saturday, September 12, and Saturday, October 10. There is little doubt that permission will bo granted to divide the usual spring meeting into two separate fixtures, and if the proposal‘is agreed to tho two classic races set down for the spring, the M‘Lcan Stakes for two-year-olds, and the Dunedin Guineas, for three-year-olds, will be run on the one day in October. At tho Otago Hunt Club will hold its annual steeplechase meeting on September 5, and the Birchwood Hunt. Club its meeting on September 19, tho Dunedin Jockey Club will no doubt specially cater for jumpers at its first meeting. This should not only help both the Hunt Clubs to obtain better fields than is usually the case m their jumping races, but will also provide an interesting afternoon’s sport for the Jockey Club’s patrons. By holding only one-day meetings some of tho lliccarton trainers may give Wingatui a miss in September owing to the heavy expense incurred for one day’s racing, but those wishing to try out their two and three-year-olds prior to their more important engagements at tho New Zealand Cup Meeting cannot afford to stay away from the October fixture. For some years past the club has raced on tho first day of their October meeting at a loss, and the committee, no doubt largely guided by the success which has followed tho Ashburton and Timarn Clubs with their single day fixtures, has wisely decided to try the change. The club can bo assured (f the support of all hunting men in Otago and Southland, and that should go a long way towards making the experiment a success.
