NEW-STYLE DRIVING A moving landscape that Hashes before the eyes of a, motorist seated id a dummy ear is part of a now device to lesscii road accidents which was shown recently. Dr G. H, Miles, of the National Institute of Industrial Psychology, is the inventor of tho test. It is claimed that the device will help a novice to get tho “feel” of a new car; an insurance company to determine roughly whether a policyholder’s accidents are due to carelessness or physical defect; a transport company to weed out applicants for posts as drivers. The dummy car used in the tests can sway from side to side and record humps. An electric fan gives the driver tho impression of travelling against the wind. As soon as tho accelerator is pressed down a scone in front begins to move, quickly or slowly, according to the driver’s imaginary speed. This gives him tho impression that ho is actually on the road.
By means of an electrical arrangement it is possible to determine how the driver takes the bends. If ho goes too near the curb or turns wrongly a bell rings.
