RATEPAYERS’ MEETING

NORTH-EAST HARBOUR ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the North-cast Harbour Ratepayers’ and Householders Association was held in the hall, Macandrew Bay, last night, .hero was an exceptionally largo attendance of members, presided over by Mr A. M'Hutchon. The annual report showed that steady progress had been made during the year, and many matters of moment had received attention, including the lighting scheme, the deviation of the creek, and the filling in of the mud flat. The sphere of the activities of the committee, however, had been limited owing to the fact that the association had no rating authority and all expenditure in the district had t receive the sanction of the county council. _ The balance-sheet showed the association to bo in a sound financial position. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows; —President, Mr A. M'Hutchon; vice-president, Mr -I. M'Pherson; secretary, Mr W. Brookman; treasurer, Mr S. If. Grigg; committee —Messrs 0. Free, 11. Luke, W. Rowlands, W. H. Riddell, 11. Hellyer, J. Hellyer, H. Gregory, and M. Budd. The question of bus faros between the city and the bay was discussed at some length, and the secretary read correspondence setting out the negotiations with the bus company to review the existing scale of fares. It was the general opinion of the meeting that the fares at present were too high, which tended to retard the progress of the district. After the matter had been thoroughly gone into, and a number of strong protests had been entered, it was resolved that the nu ■'ting endorse the action of the committee in pressing for a reduction of the fares, and that it would support the committee in any further action it might >ke to bring this about.

The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the ladies of the district, the Girl Guidos, and the outgoing committee for their work during the year.
