PORT CHALMERS GASWORKS.

TO TH. EDITOR, Sir, —I note ii long report on the above in Saturday’s issue of your paper. The writer of that report stated that the gasworks arc now about paying their way. I have my doubts about that. Another candidate for tho mayoral chair states that the annual loss is about £250. From figures I have procured I find tho debit balance on March 31, 1930, was £1,045 and a few shillings; the debit balane on April 9, 1931, was £1,427; and there was transferred from the district fund account to gas account the sum of £3OO for new retorts and £SO for clerical expenses of office. This was in June, 1930. In the face of those figures can it bo said that the gasworks arc now paying their way? During tho year nothing in the way of repairs had been spent on the works, though they badly want a good overhaul; and tho depreciation fund amounts to the great sum of £50.—1 am, etc., Ratei’ayeu No. 4. May 4.
