TIPSTER CHASED BY CROWD
UGLY SCENE OUTSIDE POLICE STATION A man hawking envelopes containing, ho declared, sensational information concerning the English Cup, nearly caused a riot outside Griffen Park football ground, Brentford, following a match between Brentford and Newport County. He disposed of a number of envelopes at threepence each, but when they were opened they were found to contain a slip of paper bearing the words “ Brentford will win tho cup.” Some of those who had been duped endeavoured to pursue the man, who ran away, and eventually sought refuge in a nearby police station. A huge crowd assembled, and mounted police endeavoured to disperse the demonstrators, some of whom were threatening to “ lynch ” tho vendor of the envelopes. The crowd forced the police horses on to the pavement, and a squad of constables had to ho summoned from the station. One man was arrested. During tho struggle truncheons were drawn, and there wore some ugly scenes before the crowd was moved on.
